Enterprise CMVR HDD Replacement

Enterprise CMVR HDD Replacement

Enterprise CMVR HDD Replacement

Replacing any HDD requires assistance from our Technical Support team.

Overview

  • Contact EEN support so they’re ready to add the drive to the array

  • Power down the unit by doing a quick-tap on the power button (This may take a minute or two).

  • Once the unit is fully powered down, unplug the one (5/620) or two (820) power cables.

  • Pop out each drive that needs to be replaced, and plug in the new drive.

  • Once complete, plug the power back in and turn the unit on.

  • Notify support and wait for the agent to inform you the device is fully operational.

Powering Down the Unit

EEN machines use ACPI to handle power on/off, which by default does a graceful shutdown.  Once you quickly tap the power button, you should see a flood of activity on the disks as the system prepares to shut down.  If you have a monitor connected, you’ll also see a bunch of shutdown messages.  Generally shutdown will take between 30-120 seconds. If it takes longer than a few minutes, ask support for guidance.

Pulling the power cables on a model 820 will turn off the LEDs on the power supplies. During normal operation, they will light green. When shut off, they will light yellow. And when unplugged, they’ll fade to black.

Going Through the Drives

EEN chassis do not require the use of any tools to remove a drive. Do not use any tools on the unit.

The top of a typical hard drive will have a sticker that looks something like this:

(Note that the serial number is highlighted in red here).

The goal is to account for all four disks (model 5/620) or 12 disks (model 820) against the report of all the disks in the unit.  We want to make sure that:

  • All “good” disks are in-place and seated properly.

  • All “bad” disks are replaced.

You should receive a report from tech support that looks something like this (example from a model 520, an 820 will have 12 drives):

BAD - Replace

/dev/sdc

K8HXXZDN

Good - Verify Installed

/dev/sda

K8JBB42D

Good - Verify Installed

/dev/sdb

K8HXX2PN

Good - Verify Installed

/dev/sdd

K8JR10BD

DO NOT ASSUME that the drives will be installed in any particular order.

The removal procedure looks like this:

For each drive in the unit:
  1. Verify the serial number on the drive.

    1. If it’s on the “good” list, go ahead and put the drive back in and check it off the list.  Note that putting the drive back in is just a matter of sliding it back into place and pushing the handle back in to lock.  It should have a nice click once the lock is engaged.

    2. If it’s not on the list at all (which means it’s “unknown”) or on the “bad” list, replace it with a replacement unit.

Finishing Up

Once you’ve cleared and seated all drives, go ahead and plug the power back in and turn the unit on.  Then let Eagle Eye Networks Technical Support know you are done with the physical swap so they can re-add the disk to the array.

Then just wait for the “all clear” to make sure that all the drives are online and the RAID array is in the process of rebuilding.  Note that system performance will be degraded a bit while the RAID array is rebuilding, which typically takes about a day on an enterprise unit like a model 820.
